The film’s story revolves around a gangster named Dushman, who becomes a local street dealer after his mother’s murder. He then vows to find the person responsible for her murder and bring him to justice.
This crime thriller features a fast-paced plot and several gripping & shocking moments. It takes you from the small Indian town of Dushman to the bigger cities of Mumbai, Delhi, and Kolkata. Although the story begins in the remote Indian village of Dushman, the viewer is soon drawn to the larger cities. The criminals here are hoodlums and petty criminals who don’t go above reproach. They prey upon innocent people, women, and kids at random and take away their money and belongings.
Dushman e Jaan follows the life of one such hoodlum, a criminal called Dushman. He becomes a local street dealer when his brother dies. Dushman soon finds the perfect buyer for his brother’s corpse, selling his share of the trade to a new business person. One day, Dushman encounters the latest murder in the area, which prompts him to start searching for the real killer. Along the way, he comes across several other criminals, and his quest to find out who killed his brother leads him to the corrupt local gangsters.
Dushman soon discovers that most of his suspects are related to each other, and he has to take all of their connections into consideration while trying to solve the case. This intricate narrative draws the audience into Mumbai criminal society’s gritty world and allows them to sympathize with the characters. The story’s dynamic nature makes it appealing to a broader audience, and many foreign directors have tried to adapt it. It has also won several awards at various film festivals.
The lead role here is played by Akshay Kumar, who is also well known for his acting skills. The Dushman story is told from the point of view of an anti-hero. Another actor, titled Badrinath Tagore, also gets a mention here, as does Neha Dhawan. The film’s supporting cast includes Baba Sehgal, Prem Chopra, Sushmita Sen, and Nitin Rathore. The exciting part of the story is that almost all the crime suspects are connected, leading to several twists in the storyline.
The director for Dushman e Jaan Drama, Surendra Kulkarni, used many innovative methods to get the story across. He wanted the viewers to connect to the story’s core and not just relate to the lead characters. For this, he kept a lot of information hidden. We were introduced to a section where a lawyer tries to solve a serial killer with a sensational twist ending. We were also privy to some crucial discoveries that changed the course of the story.
The entire movie was shot in both English and Hindi, and the directors wanted it to be viewed in both languages. Although the film did receive a warm welcome at the Indian Film Festival (IFF) in Delhi, it was ultimately a box office hit. The theme of crime, the anti-hero and detective story, appeals to a mass audience. The film’s success maybe because the audience was connected to the crimes and could empathize with the detectives and the anti-criminals.
Dushman e Jaan Drama was No. 1 at the Crocodile Showbox in Mumbai last year. It has been receiving excellent reviews from critics and audiences alike. The story and the acting are great and add the right dose of logic for a thriller movie. The cinematography is also top-notch and does justice to the story and the performance of Dushman as well.
